A teacher is an indispensable resource in our education system and so is a teacher’s mental health. Neglecting teachers’ mental health can have detrimental effects not only on themselves but also on their students, thus affecting the quality of education. A teacher’s mental health is profoundly influenced by various factors, both personal and professional.

In the past three years, the country has lost close to 60 teachers by suicide, due to mental health issues. Alcoholism among teachers has also scaled, fueled by financial, home-related, and other mental health-related issues.

To address this issue, KEWOTA aims to set up an established and functional mental health counselling centre that will be under mental health specialists who can handle such cases when the need arises.

To raise funds for the establishment, KEWOTA has pioneered an annual mental health awareness walk, with this year’s walk scheduled for 25th & 26th MAY 2024, in Nairobi, Nakuru, Machakos, Migori & Kiambu.
