The introduction of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya brought about significant changes in the education sector. As learners, teachers, and parents had to quickly adapt to this new curriculum, it became apparent that embracing technology and digital methods of teaching and learning would be a crucial aspect of this transformation. The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA), with its visionary and innovative leadership, emerged as a pivotal player in facilitating this transition.
KEWOTA’s Digital Initiative
KEWOTA took a proactive approach to meet the challenges of the CBC head-on. One of its standout initiatives is the provision of digital resources to teachers. Through this digital initiative, teachers gain access to laptops equipped with digital textbooks and a wide array of interactive and resource-filled digital learning tools. Additionally, a unique online tutoring platform enables KEWOTA members to create and assess content, while also offering them an opportunity to earn supplemental income through online teaching.
Retooling Program by the Teachers Service Commission
Recognizing the importance of preparing teachers for the CBC, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) initiated a retooling program. As part of this program, TSC has been conducting training sessions for Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers throughout the country. KEWOTA, through its well-established network of county and sub-county coordinators, has been actively involved in these training sessions. This involvement has not only given teachers a firsthand experience of digital learning but has also facilitated the recruitment of new KEWOTA members.
Embracing Digital Learning
It’s worth noting that a significant proportion of JSS teachers are young and show a high level of interest in the digital program. This enthusiasm underscores the willingness of educators in Kenya to embrace technology and modern teaching methods.
KEWOTA’s Role in Transforming Education
The Kenya Women Teachers Association has set its sights on transforming Kenya’s education sector through digital means. Recent activities undertaken by the association reveal women teachers as the change agents in this process. KEWOTA’s leaders are confident that the association will serve as a resource-rich benchmark for other sectors looking to adapt to the digital era.
KEWOTA’s Digital Platforms
Once a KEWOTA member receives a laptop, they gain access to two essential digital platforms:
- Opiq: This platform hosts current textbooks in digital format, enabling teachers to create personalized accounts. Teachers can customize the platform according to their lesson plans, benefit from cloud-based storage, and bookmark different topics for various classes. Opiq is feature-rich, offering interactive learning methods such as videos, animations, exercises, and more.
- Rooditio: An online tutoring platform with accounts for both teachers and learners. KEWOTA members access this platform as teachers, allowing them to create exercises, quizzes, and post them on the platform. Pupils can access and complete these exercises, after which teachers can mark and provide feedback. Teachers receive compensation based on the number of questions completed. Quality control officers ensure that the content meets the required standards, and parents have access to monitor their children’s progress.
Embracing the Digital Future
As the world rapidly shifts towards digital transformation, schools must adapt to stay relevant and effectively shape the future workforce. KEWOTA has demonstrated its commitment to staying ahead in this digital transition, making significant strides in promoting innovative teaching and learning methods.
In a world that increasingly relies on technology, the Kenya Women Teachers Association stands out as a leading force in the digital transformation of education.
