participation guide – kewota walk for wellness

WALK DETAILS AND STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR PARTICIPANTS

INTRODUCTION

The Kenya Women Teachers Association (KEWOTA) is a welfare organization that enhances the living standards of women in the teaching profession by providing avenues for professional, economic, and personal development.

As a welfare organization, KEWOTA strives to support the mental health of teachers, since their mental health directly affects their overall well-being, work life, and performance.

Since MAY is mental health awareness month, KEWOTA has come up with an initiative to support the mental wellness of teachers by creating an awareness campaign named #10KStepsForMyTeacher.

KEWOTA has also decided to establish a Teacher Wellness Center, to provide assessment, treatment, professional help, training, and other services to do with the wellness of teachers.

To create awareness and raise funds for the Teacher Wellness Center, KEWOTA is hosting a major awareness walk in 5 different counties, on May 25th and 26th. The walk is named 10K Steps For My Teacher: Walk For Teacher’s Mental Wellness.

BACKGROUND

A teacher is an indispensable resource in our education system and so is a teacher’s mental health. Neglecting teachers’ mental health can have detrimental effects not only on themselves but also on their students, thus affecting the quality of education. A teacher’s mental health is profoundly influenced by various factors, both personal and professional.

In the past three years, the country has lost close to 60 teachers by suicide, due to mental health issues. Alcoholism among teachers has also scaled, fuelled by financial, home-related, and other mental health-related issues.

To address this issue, KEWOTA aims to set up an established and functional Teacher Wellness Center  that will be under mental health specialists who can handle such cases when the need arises.

To raise funds for the establishment, KEWOTA has pioneered an annual mental health awareness walk, with this year’s walk scheduled for 25th & 26th MAY 2024, in Nairobi, Nakuru, Machakos, Kiambu, and Migori Counties.

ABOUT THE WALK

Charity walks are majorly a good way to create awareness and raise funds for a good course.  Walks are effective since they raise public awareness which involves a large number of people walking along public roads, all speaking in one voice and sending a unified message. Walks also portray teamwork and community effort toward betterment of the society.

The KEWOTA walk for teachers’ mental wellness will not only raise funds but also raise public awareness about the mental health of teachers. Participants will walk for more than 10 kilometers in selected counties.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE, AND HOW

TEACHERS

As the main beneficiaries of the walk, teachers need to come out in big numbers and create awareness about their mental health and help in raising funds for the teacher wellness center which will be a serene, safe, supportive haven for all teachers.

STUDENTS ABOVE 13 YEARS

Through the consent of their parents and teachers, students can participate in the walk. This will also help students to understand factors affecting teachers’ mental wellbeing, and understand some of the factors that teachers go through in order to be their heroes.

SCHOOLS

Schools can show up for the walk, as a community of teachers, parents, workers, and students to support the teachers who are the driving force behind the success of schools.

Schools can also partner with KEWOTA to support fundraising through various fundraising forms and cards available at the KEWOTA secretariat.

PARENTS

Every parent sends their children to school in order to get the best quality education. Teachers who are responsible for this outcome need our support. Register and join the walk and let us champion the mental wellbeing of our teachers.

Parents are also encouraged to speak to their children about the mental wellbeing of teachers and why they need our support.

Also support the course by helping students to raise funds through friends, churches, and the community in general, and support the student’s participation in the walk.

COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS

For established and upcoming community-based organizations, this will be the perfect opportunity to participate in a good cause while networking with other like-minded organizations.

You can sponsor the walk through available sponsorship opportunities, and register your team to do the walk.

CORPORATES

The success of a nation depends on the quality of education, and this in turn depends on the well-being of teachers. As corporates, it is our social responsibility to ensure we support our teachers.

Support the walk-through partnerships and sponsorships, as well as sponsoring your team members for this activity which will also serve as a good team-building platform.
